Possible application of the loess-cement-zeolite composites for radioactive waste disposal

, : Possible application of the loess-cement-zeolite composites for radioactive waste disposal. Spisanie na Bulgarskogo Geologichesko Druzhestvo 64, Part 1-3(Pages 23-27

More than 40% of the electricity in Bulgaria is produced by the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant. In consequence of its activity, low, intermediate and high level radioactive wastes are generated. The first two kinds of them are temporarily stored at the plant site and the problem of their disposal has not been solved yet. The loess terrain near Kozloduy NPP is among the prospective sites for a construction of a repository for low and intermediate level radioactive wastes. The paper deals with the investigations on compositions made on the basis of loess-cement mixtures with a zeolite additive as engineered barriers against radionuclide migration. Two kind of compositions have been prepared according to their moisture content: compositions compacted at the optimum moisture content W (sub opt) until attainment of the standard density P (sub ds) and compositions prepared at a higher than W (sub opt) moisture content. The values of the unconfined compressive strength and permeability of loess-cement-zeolite samples are compared with the values of the unconfined compressive strength and permeability of loess-cement mixtures without any additives. Both compositions--with optimum and higher moisture content are prospective as an additional barrier for a low and intermediate level radioactive waste repository.

To define the gene loci, we have analyzed 40 tumors by applying 18 polymorphic microsatellite markers. An allelic imbalance at all informative lo...
