Problems associated with tunnelling in low cover zone parallel to slopes at Bhaba Augmentation Project in Himachal Pradesh

, : Problems associated with tunnelling in low cover zone parallel to slopes at Bhaba Augmentation Project in Himachal Pradesh. Journal of Engineering Geology 24(1-4): 21-23

A part of the proposed 2.5 m diameter, 5 km long tunnel running parallel to the ground slope with low cover experienced poor to very poor rock mass conditions due to the presence of open glide cracks and joints filled with infiltrated yellowish clay. Tunnelling through such rock mass resulted in high overbreaks, roof falls and, at times, total collapse of the tunnel roof hindering the progress of work. The paper discusses these problems, probable effect on long term stability and the remedial measures.
