Problems in the cartography of ground ice; a pilot project for northwestern Canada

, : Problems in the cartography of ground ice; a pilot project for northwestern Canada. International Conference on Permafrost, Proceedings 4(Pages 480-485

A new permafrost map of Canada is being proposed, emphasizing the occurrence and distribution of ground ice. Problems include the development of a suitable classification scheme and the quality and variability of the source data. Previous work on ground ice classification and mapping is reviewed and a new, morphological classification of ground ice bodies is proposed. The main classes are: ice crystals in voids, equidimensional ice masses, layers or sheets of ice (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) and networks of segregated ice. A qualitative classification of the amount of ground ice is proposed. Selected geomorphic features, such as pingos, will be shown by symbols. A pilot study map of northwestern Canada, using these classifications is being prepared.--Modified journal abstract.
