Sediment transport and river morphology; a paradigm for study

, : Sediment transport and river morphology; a paradigm for study. International Gravel-Bed Rivers Workshop 4(Pages 115-148

Investigation of sediment transport by the "inverse" method of observing changes in river channel morphology reveals the direct linkage between hydraulic processes and river geomorphology. The approach emphasizes the occurrence and changes in sediment storage along the channel, which are of central interest in engineering problems, provide a direct measure of channel stability, and can be applied on time scales varying from that of a runoff event to months or years. Morphological methods do not provide complete sediment budgets; information is restricted to river bed material. Several approaches are described for estimating bed material transport from morphological change. Attempts to use observed morphological changes to infer information about sediment transport emphasize several aspects of river channel behavior about which much more needs to be learned. These are discussed.
