Seismic pore water pressures in tailings dams

, : Seismic pore water pressures in tailings dams. Memorias del Congreso Panamericano de Mecanica de Suelos e Ingenieria de Fundaciones = Proceedings of the Panamerican Conference on Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering 7(2): 641-655

Earthquake loadings generate pore water pressures which siginificantly affect seismic stability of tailings dams. Predictions of the increments of pore water pressures, to be induced by real earthquakes, are hindered by difficulties involved in proper simulation of actual boundary conditions, soil natural structure and stress history. Therefore, in-situ measurements of dynamic excess pore pressure changes, recorded during occurrence of earthquakes, are necessary to improve predictions of true behavior of tailings dams. This paper presents details in Central Chile, which includes a seismograph and dynamic piezometers.--Modified journal abstract.
