Sequence stratigraphy is a methodology for analyzing the temporal and physical relationships of sedimentary strata. This methodology is based on the observation that sedimentary strata. This methodology is based on the observation that sedimentary rocks are composed of layers of variable thickness. Each layer is characterized by a set of rock properties and is bounded by surfaces. These surfaces, or stratal boundaries, separate one set of rock properties from an overlying or underlying set, are commonly impedance boundaries, and have chronostratigraphic significance. Layers include lamina, the smallest observable layer; bed, parasequence, the largest layer. Each smaller layer is the building block of the next largest. For example, beds compose parasequences, parasequences stack in patterns that build sequences. Within each layer, rocks and rock properties are distributed in predictable patterns. These patterns commonly exhibit a fractal distribution.
