Sheet 16 of the international tectonic map of Europe at 1:2,500,000 and sheet 3 of the international tectonic map of Africa at 1:5,000,000

The Arabian platform is bounded on the northeast by a major line of overthrusts northeast of the Zagros range. The Zagros occupies the foredeep of this platform; here sedimentation was essentially uninterrupted until the end of the Miocene. Precambrian basement, as inferred from structure contours on the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and lower Tertiary, slopes northeastward from outcrops in the central Arabian massif to depths of more than 12,000 m at the Zagros front. A northeast-trending embayment in southeastern Arabia is filled by the sediments of the Rub 'al Khali. The presence of ophiolites is not an infallible indication of geosynclinal conditions, because massifs of ophiolites can develop on the margins of platforms and may sometimes be extruded under continental conditions. The massifs of Turkey and Iran are considered the result of unstable crustal conditions without geosynclinal development.

A general strategy (solution, solid-phase, and polycondensation) for the synthesis of antigenic phosphoglycans (PG) of the protozoan parasite Leishmania is presented. Phosphoglycans constitute the variable structural and functional domain of major...
