Subduction induced fracture zones and distribution of hydrothermal activity in Mexico

, : Subduction induced fracture zones and distribution of hydrothermal activity in Mexico. Tectonophysics 103(1-4): 297-305

The analysis of the geometry of distribution of earthquake foci occurring in the continental wedge northeast of the Middle America subduction zone reveals that the earthquakes accumulated in well-separated zones, which dip to the southwest and run parallel to the Middle America Trench. These zones are interpreted as a system of deep seismically active fractures induced in the continental plate by the process of subduction. Moreover, a system of transverse seismically active fractures was delineated in the region of the Tehuantepec Isthmus. Deep fracture zones correlate with the surface manifestations of hydrothermal activity in Mexico.--Modified journal abstract.
