Tackling of collapsed zone in the exit face of main head race tunnel of Ramman Hydel Project stage-II, Darjeeling District, West Bengal

, : Tackling of collapsed zone in the exit face of main head race tunnel of Ramman Hydel Project stage-II, Darjeeling District, West Bengal. Journal of Engineering Geology 14(3-4): 67-74

A major collapse occurred in the main head race tunnel of Rammam Hydel Project Stage-II at RD 404 to 412 m. in the exit face. The restoration of the collapse took 115 days. Around 3,000 m (super 3) of collapsed materials consisting of dislodged rock mass and clay, surcharged with seepage were removed. This paper deals with the methods adopted in tackling the zone by simultaneous forepoling, supporting and consolidating the crown by placer concrete. The unfavourable geological condition persisted even after tackling the collapsed zone. Advance forepoling, benching, tunnelling by controlled blasting, immediate concreting at crown were adopted during the advancement of tunnel beyond the collapse zone. The author feels that the method adopted so far was very suitable while tunnelling through soft rock strata and where series of shear plane are encountered during process of tunnelling.
