The digital classroom; what students think

, : The digital classroom; what students think. Abstracts with Programs - Geological Society of America 30(7): 391

The University of Texas at El Paso recently opened a multimedia classroom building. All lecture halls are totally digitally equipped, including live Internet access. This past summer session approximately 70 students enrolled in an Introduction to Physical Geology course, consisting of approximately 50% upper division (juniors and seniors) and approximately 50% lower division (freshmen and sophomores). The course was designed to take as full advantage of the digital media available as possible with heavy use of the web as the main communication and content tool. Textbooks were optional with readings provided via the web. In addition, nearly all of the homeworks required use of the web. Each topic covered was accessed from the syllabus and included readings, and a question section. Homework exercises and special reading material directly related to El Paso regional geology were included when possible. Students initial reaction to this new approach ranged from terror to skepticism which was fueled in part by the fast pace of the summer session and their lack of computer knowledge. Homework deadlines were relaxed, more detailed web pages were constructed, and demonstration of the web-based material during class time all contributed to students becoming more comfortable with the digital approach. Five weeks into the 8-week summer session students were asked to give their opinions about the make-up of the course. Most had come to not only accept but also enjoy the new format. An overwhelming majority stated that the best part of the course was not having to purchase a textbook. However, another large group stated that the printing of the web sites was too expensive. Many students cited the animations, video clips, and images projected onto a large screen were very helpful in understanding geologic concepts. Responses to exams showed this to be true. The course (and student responses) can be accessed at the following URL: http://www.geo.utep.edu/class_notes/3101_vharder/syllabus.html.
