The myocardinal organization of coalcomaninid rudists revisited

, : The myocardinal organization of coalcomaninid rudists revisited. Geobios, Memoire Special 22(Pages 75-85

The taxonomy of caprinid rudists was hitherto mainly based on the arrangement of the pallial canals, the myocardinal organization being subordinate. Representatives of the Coalcomaninae, both primitive (Amphitriscoelus) and advanced (Coalcomana, Caprinuloidea, Mexicaprina) are here compared with those of the Caprininae (Caprina, Caprinula and Offneria), with emphasis on the myocardinal organization. The Family Caprinidae must be defined principally after the myocardinal organization and not only on the geometry and the arrangement of the pallial canals. The canal architectural pattern should be used only for the diagnosis of the genera and the species. The definition of the family must to be based on the existence of a projecting posterior myophoral plate present either on the lower valve (Caprininae) or on the upper valve (Coalcomaninae). The characteristic feature of the Subfamily Coalcomaninae is the downward development of the posterior myophoral plate of the upper valve, which projects into the broad posterior cavity of the lower valve.
