Tools for data integration and management for geoenvironmental projects; application to hydrogeological mapping

, : Tools for data integration and management for geoenvironmental projects; application to hydrogeological mapping. Abstracts with Programs - Geological Society of America 32(7): 515

It is often said that data collection and integration makes up to 80% of a project ressources. Data integration is the process by which information from various sources, structures and formats are organised to be access as in single source of data. In geoenvironmental projects, data are highly heterogeneous in quality, format and availability. The compilation of numerous sources of information by several people (scientists, professionals, students, etc.) makes data management a key issue. Several tools has been developed during the Piemont Laurentien hydrogeological mapping project at the Centre geoscientifique de Quebec, and other related projects to ease data and access to the main database. One of these tools, GIMS (Geoenviromental Information Management System) is a data acquisition tool centered around a simple data structure that: 1) shield casual users from the database tasks, 2) monitors data manipulations performed by users such as insertion, edition, deletion, 3) allows a database manager to act globally on the database (instead of having a groups of users with many copies of the data) and 4) forces the vision of a single data collection instead of a series of application based files. Other tools such as Geomatter II and Hydrolink allows to classify and organise the maps, texts and images into a NADM (North American Data Model) derived structure and distribute it through the web. Since the information is organised into a single model, transfert of information from projects toward web publication is easy and automatable.
