Typomorphic characteristics and geological significance of sphalerite in skarn lead-zinc deposits

, : Typomorphic characteristics and geological significance of sphalerite in skarn lead-zinc deposits. Bulletin of the Institute of Mineral Deposits, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences 25(Pages 104-113

This paper describes physical and optical properties, unit cell parameters and chemical composition of sphalerite from skarn lead-zinc deposits with a discussion on different types of this mineral. Sphalerite from skarn lead-zinc deposits has lower hardness and specific gravity but higher reflectance and unit cell parameters than sphalerite from lead-zinc deposits of volcanic, hydrothermal-metamorphic, hydrothermal and stratabound types. Sphalerite has high iron content and subordinate amounts of manganese and cadmium. The major associated minerals include galena, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, hedenbergite and manganhedenbergite. Sphalerite mainly occurs in the manganhedenbergite skarn and is closely related to the latter, which, therefore, can serve as an ore-hunting indicator.
