An experimental study of ration in bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) of Karelia

, : An experimental study of ration in bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) of Karelia. Zoologicheskii Zhurnal, 593: 441-448

The food ration of red-backed voles was investigated. The time spent on eating forage and food activity was estimated. Experiments were conducted to reveal food plants. The main part of basic and secondary forages consists of the most common plants. The level of consumption of bilberries was the same both in cages and in nature. An inverse dependence was shown between the amount of forage eaten and variation of this amount in different animals during different seasons. The seasonal change of forages under the experimental conditions was quite distinct and coincides with the food dynamics in nature. The ration of red-backed voles in Karelia was intermediate between those in the northern and southern parts of the range. The consumption of main groups of forages was subject to sharp seasonal changes.
