Ecologie des glossines en secteur pre-forestier de Cote-d'Ivoire. Relation avec la trypanosomiase humaine et possibilites de lutte

This paper gives the results of a tsetse fly research program in the preforested area of Ivory Coast. The main investigation tool was the Challier-Laveissiere's biconical trap. The ecodistribution for resting and pupal sites in Glossina palpalis, G. pallicera and G. nigrofusca were described in the Trypanosoma brucei gambiense sleeping sickness focus of Vavoua. Population dynamics, host preferences, activity cycles were compared between tsetse populations around plantations and villages. Man-fly contact was high where human habitats were scattered in plantations; but in village tsetse flies feed mainly on pigs. Resettlement of scattered populations may prevent against sleeping sickness transmission. Experiments on insecticide control tsetse flies with impregnated screens, were promising.
