Effect of Sawa-wasabi extracts on the growth of Helicobacter pylori and the combined effect with drugs

, : Effect of Sawa-wasabi extracts on the growth of Helicobacter pylori and the combined effect with drugs. Yakugaku Zasshi 127(Suppl. 4): 31-33

In this experiment, the growth inhibitory activities of the extract s of rhizome, leaves and stems of Sawa-wasabi (Wasabia japonica Matsum) upon H.pylori strains were examined in 1313 culture. The combined effects of wasabi leaf extract with commercial medicines were also tested. Sawa-wasabi rhizome and leaf extracts showed similar inhibitory effects on all three H.pylori strains. A combined treatment of leaf extract and Clarithromycin(CAM) produced 8-fold greater antibacterial potency than CAM alone. Oral administration of leaves to H.pylori-infected gerbis, decreased the gastric growth of H.pylori. Tissue injury and petecbial hemorrhage scores were significantly reduced in gerbils given wasabi leaf extract. By administration of the wasabi extract, suppression effect on the oxidative stress in gastric mucosal tissue was observed.
