Seasonal occurrence of primary and secondary screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the Pacific coastal area of Chiapas, Mexico during 1978-1979

, : Seasonal occurrence of primary and secondary screwworm (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the Pacific coastal area of Chiapas, Mexico during 1978-1979. Journal of Medical Entomology, 183: 240-243

During 1978 in the Pacific coastal area of Chiapas, Mexico, populations of the primary screwworm, C. hominivorax, reached seasonal highs in July and Nov.-Dec. and a seasonal low in April. Secondary screwworm, C. macellaria, population trends were similar, peaking in July and Nov. with a seasonal low in March. Collection of egg masses from sheep showed a 98+% natural viability rate. Data from trap captures and sentinel animals indicate the presence of a resident population sufficient to provide the base for a buildup in screwworm infestations at any time during the year.
