Stock-recruitment relationships in the vendace (Coregonus albula (L.)) in Lake Oulujarvi, northern Finland

, : Stock-recruitment relationships in the vendace (Coregonus albula (L.)) in Lake Oulujarvi, northern Finland. Aqua Fennica, 212: 153-161

Stock-recruitment relationships, in vendace were studied in L. Oulujarvi (surface area = 928 km-2), northern Finland. Commercial fishing is usually based on vendace stocks, but the high stock fluctuation is a severe problem. Stock-recruitment data were fitted to the Ricker, Saila-Lorda and Shepherd recruitment functions. The relationship between spawning stock size and the number of recruits was dome-shaped (R-2 = 0.32..0.36 depending on the model). The results support the hypotheses of critical period concept and that intrinsic factors are important in population regulation of vendace. The predictive power of the stock-recruitment models is poor for practical fisheries management. The size of parent stocks seems to be only one of the factors affecting vendace recruitment and therefore models considering biotic and abiotic environmental factors should be developed.
