Dimorphism in spermatozoa of Anticarsia gemmatalis Huebner, 1918 (Insecta, Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)

, : Dimorphism in spermatozoa of Anticarsia gemmatalis Huebner, 1918 (Insecta, Lepidoptera, Noctuidae). Brazilian Journal of Morphological Sciences. jan-jun; 171: 5-10

An ultrastructural and cytochemical study showed that the noctuid moth Anticarsia gemmatalis produced eupyrene (nucleate and apyrene (anucleate) spermatozoa. The anterior end of apyrene spermatozoa consisted of a short, electron-dense cap instead of the nucleus. Ethanol-phosphotungstic acid staining suggested the presence of basic proteins in the cap materia The anterior region of eupyrene spermatozoa contained a nucleus and tubular acrosome. The microtubular pattern of the axoneme was 9+9+2 in both spermatozoa. Two mitochondrial derivates apposed to the axoneme in the usual V arrangement occurred in apyrene spermatozoa; only one mitochondrial derivative was seen in eupyrene spermatozoa. Elaborate lacinate and rectangular appendages extended from the plasma membrane overlying the acrosome to near the posterior end of the flagellum of eupyrene spermatozoa. The structural arrangements seen in the two types of sperm were similar to those of other noctuid moth species.
