Isoagglutination and heteroagglutination of the erythrocytes of the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus texianus, and the reactions of cotton rat plasmas with human erythrocytes

, : Isoagglutination and heteroagglutination of the erythrocytes of the cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus texianus, and the reactions of cotton rat plasmas with human erythrocytes. Jour Exptl Zool 121(2): 295-310

The cells of the cotton rat were treated with the plasma of other cotton rats, human plasmas, the sera of plasmas of other vertebrates, and the sera of some invertebrates. Isohemagglutinins could not be detected in the blood of the cotton rat. Tests for heteroagglutinins for cotton rat cells showed that agglutinations were generally strong at 22-25[degree]C. and reduced or prevented at 37[degree]C. Of the vertebrate sera tested, that of the chicken had the strongest agglutinative action and was exceptional in that the reaction was augmented at 37[degree]C. The sera of man, rabbit, beef, horse, and goat all agglutinated the rat cells to about the same extent; action was somewhat reduced at 37[degree]C. The serum of the guinea pig gave slight reactions at room temps., but none at 37[degree]C. Plasma of the white rat did not agglutinate cotton rat cells at either temp. The sera of the invertebrates, king crab, lobster, blue crab, and spider crab showed differential capacities to agglutinate rat cells. Appropriate absorptions of human plasmas revealed that human isoagglutinins and heteroagglutinins for rat cells are different. Plasma of the cotton rat agglutinates all types of human cells. These agglutinins may be removed by absorption with human cells.
