Mineralogical classification of the Yafa Meteorite fall, Yemen

, : Mineralogical classification of the Yafa Meteorite fall, Yemen. Assiut University Journal of Geology 36(2): 161-169

A meteorite fell at Dakhlet Ma'raban, Wadi Yahar, Yafa Province, on July 15, 2000. Two specimens, 5 kg and 700 g, are known. Macroscopically, the meteorite has a well developed fusion crust and pale interior. Modal analysis gives 12 vol.% Fe-Ni alloys, 4 vol.% troilite (FeS), 4 vol.% olivine phenocrysts, 32 vol.% fairly well defined chondrules, abundant accessory chromite, minor inconspicuous feldspar, and a granular, silicate-dominated groundmass (48 vol.%) consisting largely of chondrule fragments. The analysed olivine has a composition of Fo (sub 81) Fa (sub 19) ; where as that of orthopyroxene is En (sub 81.3) Wo (sub 1.4) . The metal alloy kamacite contains 0.56 wt% Co and 6.78 wt% Ni; whereas taenite averages 42.1 wt% Ni and tetrataenite 50.3 wt% Ni. Based on the data collected in this study, the meteorite is an H5, and weakly shocked (S2), ordinary chondrite, in which tetrataenite is confirmed as a common accessory mineral phase. The petrologic grade is assessed at 5. The name Yafa is proposed after the region in which the meteorite fell.
