On the morphology of Neritina virginea (Linnaeus, 1758) (Gastropoda, Neritidae)

, : On the morphology of Neritina virginea (Linnaeus, 1758) (Gastropoda, Neritidae). Thalassas, 182: 9-15

Neritina virginea is characteristic of estuarine zones, being found on the mud bottom or on the vegetation roots, in great numbers. In this work it was described the external morphology, the shell and the radula of N. virginea collected in the estuary of the Coco River, situated in the east zone of Fortaleza - CE. Radula was observed and photographed through optic and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Neritina virginea is characterized by the atypical presence of one columela, forming a transversal septum. As a consequence the columelar muscle presents a "vest" format, involving laterally the body of the animal, being this characteristic more conspicuous in the males. The radula presents one rachidian tooth, with 2 bristles; five laterals teeth, the fifth tooth presents a foramen crossing the medium-inferior region; and many marginal teeth of two types, one with 8 bristles or monocuspides.
