On the origin of flight in insects

, : On the origin of flight in insects. Jour Insect Physiol 10(1): 81-88

From a study of the aerodynamic behavior of various shapes it is possible to suggest ways in which the paranotal lobes that were later to evolve into wings would have a selective advantage while still very small. It is shown to be very unlikely that wings could have evolved in small insects. Larger insects of perhaps 1 cm long with small legs are shown to be capable of the best gliding performance provided suitable attitudes can be maintained. It is suggested that this control of attitude could come from the paranotal lobes.
