The caves of the Erve Valley in the Mayenne department are known for their remains from the Final Middle Palaeolithic and, above all from the Upper Palaeolithic. The test pits carried out in 1999 and 2000 in front of La Chevre Cave aimed at determining the extent of the 19th Century excavations. The wastes from these excavations yielded many objects from the Final Middle Palaeolithic, from the Upper Palaeolithic and from more recent periods. Two fossils, however, stand out in this collection. They are a fragment of upper canine of Homotherium cf. latidens and an upper molar of cf. Damn clactoniana, which indicate that an older level, probably belonging to the Middle Pleistocene, was or is still present in the cave. The determination of such level would be important for our knowledge of this period in the West of France, as the only remarkable site currently known for the Middle Pleistocene in this region is the site of Menez-Dregan (Finistere). in which faunal remains are very poorly preserved.
