Studies in colour changes of fish. I. The action of certain endocrine secretions in the minnow

, : Studies in colour changes of fish. I. The action of certain endocrine secretions in the minnow. British Jour Exp Biol 3(2): 123-140

Adrenalin injected intramuscularly produces contraction of all chromatophores. The minimal dose for causing pallor over the whole body was .005 mgm.; but the minimal dose for causing localized pallor was .00005 mgm. This latter figure was regarded as a gauge of the concentration necessary to produce contraction. "Infundin" caused a contraction of the melanophores and an expansion of the erythrophores and xanthophores when injected intramuscularly. The minimal dose was .001 cc. of the sterile extract for all 3 actions. It was found that the minimal dose of whole fresh cod's pituitary was .0005 mgm. Considerations of dosage and of the double action on melanophores and erythrophores excluded the pituitary from taking any part in the rapid changes of color in fish. Commercial extracts of the thyroid and pineal glands had no effect.

Thus, they may be considered independent isolates...

This study was conducted to determine the effect...
