The Greenland bird-banding system

, : The Greenland bird-banding system. Arctic 9(4): 258-264

Bird-banding in Greenland is organized by the Univ. Zool. Mus., Copenhagen and the Ministeriet for Greenland and has been operating for 10 years. Methods of distributing and applying bands, recording data, payments for recoveries etc. are described. From 1946 to 1954, 30,215 birds were banded and 2,474 recovered, not including young found dead on the breeding grounds. Practically all recoveries are due to shooting. Thirty-nine spp. have been banded. Of the recoveries, averaging 8.2%, 7.6% have been recovered in Greenland and 0.6% recovered abroad. The highest percentage of recovery, 36.8 - 38.5%, for the sea eagle, Haliaeetus albicilla, shows that protective measures are needed for this sp. Snowbuntings move to the interior of Canada and wheatears winter in Europe. Old-squaws have been recovered on the Alaska-Yukon border and in the Baltic Sea. Two recoveries of king-eider have been made in northern Canada. The longest flight ever recorded by banding, 18,000 km, was made by an arctic tern, Sterna paradisaea, banded in Disko Bay and recovered in Natal less than 3 months later.
