The nature of the pulmonary alveolar lining

, : The nature of the pulmonary alveolar lining. Anat Rec 62(2): 147-177

Lungs of rabbits and guinea pigs were distended to varying degrees, and fixed in toto, with AgNO3 solns., ammoniacal Ag solns. and Ag citrate solns. perfused through the pulmonary artery or injected into the trachea. The vascular networks were outlined by carmine gelatin perfusion, and by perfusion of Ag citrate. The connective tissue fibers were stained by various standard methods. Uniform, rounded defects in the alveolar septa, or "alveolar pores" were constant in adult animals, increasing in number with age. They are considered to be of physiological occurrence, and differ in structure from holes made by preparation of the material. A homogeneous ground substance is described as making up part of the alveolar septum. With most techniques the alveolar septa were seen to consist only of a rich capillary network, numerous reticular, elastic and collagenous fibers, scattered connective tissue cells and an incompletely defined apparently homogeneous ground substance.
