Wing veins of bees as strengthening elements

, : Wing veins of bees as strengthening elements. Psyche 33(2): 39-41

Cases cited to throw doubt upon the obvious proposition that the veins are important for strength are not inconsistent with it, but require less strength on account of smaller size. The cubital cells are often reduced to 2 in families of small bees. Of 291 anomalous cases veins are obliterated in 1 long-tongued nest-maker, 59 long-tongued inquilines and 231 short-tongued bees. Correlated with the presumption of strength the veins are obliterated in the following order: transverse cubital 2 in 226 cases, 1 in 60, 3 in 3 cases, 1st recurrent in 1, 2nd recurrent in 1.
