A Differential Action Of Diphenylhydantoin On The Motor Cortex Of The Cat

, : A Differential Action Of Diphenylhydantoin On The Motor Cortex Of The Cat. Archives Internationales de Pharmacodynamie et de Therapie 149: 45-55

Carefully regulated dosages of diphenylhydantoin were shown to act differentially on pyramidal responses to PR, PO, and VL stimulation in the cat. The PR, and VL elicited responses were depressed by 10-15 mg/kg doses of the drug by which only slight depression was caused to the PO elicited response. This differential action was demonstrable up to 25 mg/kg doses, above which all pyramidal responses were severely depressed. The D and I waves of the PR pyramidal response were depressed one independently of the other. The pyramidal response to VL stimulation was depressed prior to the cortical response to such stimulation, and of the latter response its late components showed more sensitivity to the drug than the shorter latency waves. These differential actions of the drug might shed light on the mechanism of the specific non-hypnotic anticonvulsant effectiveness of diphenylhydantoin.
