Alterations in femoral blood flow and resistance during rhythmic exercise and sustained muscular contractions in patients with arteriosclerosis

, : Alterations in femoral blood flow and resistance during rhythmic exercise and sustained muscular contractions in patients with arteriosclerosis. Surgery, Gynecology & Obstetrics 121(4): 767-776

Using an indicator dilution method, quantitative measurements of the hemodynamic alterations which accompany rhythmic exercise and sustained muscular contractions of the lower extremity were made. In elderly patients with arteriosclerosis, regardless of the presence of major arterial occlusion, the femoral blood flow was increased and the femoral resistance decreased with exercised. The cardiac output was a significant factor in determining the magnitude of the blood flow increase. No difference in the blood flow arteriovenous oxygen extraction relationship was found between sustained and rhythmic contractions. The magnitude of the hemodynamic response of the entire limb to exercise was not influenced by the presence of leg claudication. Quantitative measurement during exercise afford a precise means of assessing peripheral vascular physiology and evaluating the response to certain therapeutic procedures.
