Biological methods of diagnosing equine pregnancy 1 The mouse test 2 The capon test, by A W GREENWOOD and J S S BLYTH

, : Biological methods of diagnosing equine pregnancy 1 The mouse test 2 The capon test, by A W GREENWOOD and J S S BLYTH. Proc Roy Soc 798: 237-247, 247-258

I. Equine urine contains increasing quantities of oestrin from about the 60th day of pregnancy. Samples of urine were treated with sulpho-salicylic acid, neutralized, and the filtrate injected in suitable dilutions into oophorectomized mice. For 50-60 day pregnant mares, 0.6-2.4 cc. were used, and the test considered positive if 3 of the 6 test mice, including those receiving the highest dose, showed fully cornified vaginal smears. For under 50 days, the amounts were increased by 0.05 cc.
