Coding of brightness by neurons of the visual cortex of the cat

, : Coding of brightness by neurons of the visual cortex of the cat. Dokl Akad Nauk Sssr 170(6): 1443-1446

The relationship between the average spike frequency and the form of the inter-spike interval duration distribution curve and changes in illumination were studied in cats immobilized with a muscle relaxant, anesthetized with pentathol, or intact. In neurons responsive to movement, but unresponsive to changes in light intensity, no changes in the distribution of inter-spike intervals was observed with illumination. In neurons responding to changes in illumination by a change in spike frequency, increased light intensity produced a decrease in the number of short inter-spike intervals and increased the number of long inter-spike intervals. Neurons in which the converse relationship between light intensity change and duration of inter-spike interval obtained were also observed. A correlation existed between the neuronal response to the onset and termination of illumination and changes in the distribution of inter-spike interval duration.
