Constitution of certain nutshells

, : Constitution of certain nutshells. Biochem Jour 30(6): 971-976

The powdered nut shell was fractioned into benzene, alcohol, water and 5% NaOH (cold) soluble fractions, the residue being divided into lignin and cellulose. The oils in the benzene soluble fraction were similar to those isolated by Schuette et al. from the endosperm of nuts of this species. The alkali soluble fraction (hemicelluloses) were of the usual form with the exception that gluconic acid was isolated from the hydrolysis products. The lignin, with a basic formula of C9H12O4, fitted to the usual C36 formula. In common with the cellulose from peanut hull the cellulose is associated with a large xylan content, 29.3%.
