Contact dermatitis caused by penicillin

, : Contact dermatitis caused by penicillin. Lancet 250(6392): 307-308

In view of the increasing use of penicillin for local application, it is thought worthwhile to add this single case of sensitivity to the drug to those already reported. Penicillin powder was applied as a field-dressing to a lacerated leg wound. The abraded skin was in contact with penicillin for 40 days (several applications). Because of the wound condition and severe active dermatitis, the man was admitted to the infirmary and received both local applications and intramusc. drip penicillin therapy. Since the dermatitis was spreading, a patch test was made by gauze soaked in penicillin applied to the upper arm. Erythema and vesiculation appeared in 24 hrs. Cf. Ibid, p. 308.
