Dendrochronological studies in New Zealand

, : Dendrochronological studies in New Zealand. Tree Ring Bull 22(1/4): 7-11

Basic research on annual rings of the native trees has just been started. Of the trees that offer possibilities for archaeological work, kauri (Agathis australis) and totara (Podocarpus halli and P. totara) are most promising. Many species are unsuitable for cross-dating work and the process is difficult for any species because local climatic conditions are so variable. Minimum ages for archaeological sites are 240 years for Hina Hina midden, 219 years for Pounawea midden, and 256 years for Papatowai midden, all in Otago.
