Development of blood vessels in feather papillae

, : Development of blood vessels in feather papillae. Bull Internal Acad Polonaise Sci Et Lett Cl Sci Math Et Nat Ser B Sci Nat (7b): 827-833

The feather papillae of injected chick embryos were cleared and studied whole. Serial sections were also used. Vascular loops appeared first, secondarily a plexus. From this plexus a vein and artery extended into the lengthening anlage of the feather. With development of the keratin layer of the shaft the capillaries atrophied. Later a rich plexus extended from the cutaneous vessels into the feather sheath. Coincidently the feather was transformed into down. Thus at the time when keratin formation was increasing the blood supply diminished, which suggests that the material to make keratin is directly derived from albumen.
