Development of the embryonic thyroid in the chick embryos

, : Development of the embryonic thyroid in the chick embryos. Arch Ital Anat E Embriol 44(3): 376-421

Serial sections of 30 chick embryos were made and the volumes of the thyroid computed by Castaldi's method. The curve of the volumetric growth at the various ages is very complicated and may be divided in 5 phases. In the 2d (10-11 days) and in the 4th (18-19 days) phase a rapid growth is noted, while at the end of the last phase, there is a marked diminution in the volume. Histologic investigations show that the thyroid growth is due to: growth of the gland tissue, infiltration of the mesenchyme and of the blood vessels, and appearance of the colloid; these factors operating in different periods give rise to the different growth rates. The changes in volume of the gland are not due to the function, as in the adults, for the gland does not reach its complete differentiation before birth.
