Die Praxis der Grundumsatzbestimmungen

, : Die Praxis der Grundumsatzbestimmungen. Die Praxis der Grundumsatzbestimmungen viii + 61p

This is a brief review of the whole field of basal metabolism, including the author's findings in 5000 individuals, mostly children. He employed the Krogh apparatus and used for purposes of comparison the normal standards of Harris and Benedict for adults and of Kestner and Knipping for children. Perhaps the chief value of the work lies in the references to the recent German and Austrian literature. There are few references to English or American writers and the titles of the American journals are distorted almost beyond recognition. He warns against putting too much reliance on basal metabolism tests and pays much attention to the variations which occur spontaneously as well as those caused by a large variety of clinical conditions. His views on the diagnosis and treatment of exophthalmic goiter agree with those held in the majority of clinics in America. Iodine therapy followed by operation is the method of choice but he speaks rather favorably of x-ray treatment. He has seen only 8 cases which he regarded as Basedow's disease caused by iodine. He devotes a good deal of space to the confused subject of specific dynamic action in disease and concludes that it is not of much value in differential diagnosis on account of the many factors which influence it.
