Drugs, medicines and man

, : Drugs, medicines and man. Drugs, medicines and man viii+248p

This book has been written expressly for the general reader with little or no background in the medical sciences. It is an absorbing, clear account of how drugs act upon the human body. The author starts with a brief survey of drugs and medicines in earlier times and then discusses the actions of nicotine, purges, anesthetics, tranquilizers and the bartitu-rates, soporifics, and drugs of addiction such as opium and morphine. The fatal epidemics caused by ergot and its early use in childbirth are described. Chapters on alcohol, insulin, cortisone, sulfa drugs, new antibiotics, obesity, sex hormones, iodine, as well as many other subjects are described. The author closes the text by discussing startling possibilities for future discoveries.

Polyunsaturated highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) hydrocarbon distributions of laboratory cultures of five strains of the planktonic diatom Rhizosolenia setigera (Brightwell) are shown herein to be highly variable. Some strains produced both haslen...

Previous studies have shown that the adenylyl cyclase of intact granulosa cells from immature porcine follicles has a uniquely prolonged responsiveness to FSH and an atypically poor responsiveness to cholera toxin relative to other cells. The pres...

Oral and i.v. glucose tolerance, insulin response to i.v. and oral glucose load as well as insulin sensitivity were evaluated in 58 low insulin responders. They were selected from a group of 226 healthy subjects with normal fasting blood glucose a...

Nofs, S.A.; Dierenfeld, E.S.; Backus, R.C., 2017: Effect of increasing taurine and methionine supplementation on urinary taurine excretion in a model insectivore, the giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla). The giant anteater (Mymercophaga tridactyla) is a highly specialized insectivore for which nutrient requirements are not clearly established, making diet formulation challenging for this species. Multiple clinical reports suggest anteaters have an...

Fluorescence of isoindole probe covalently bound to spectrin from pig erythrocytes, and fluorescence of tryptophanyl residues were used to study spectrin interaction with phospholipid bilayers. Evidence would be provided for conformational changes...

An analytical method employing novel sample preparation and liquid chromatography coupled with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometric detection (LC-APCI/MS) was developed for the determination of fosfomycin in human plasma.
