Translated from Mikrobiologiya 30(6): 1028-1032. 1961. The effect of disinfectants on the microbial cell is first manifested in injury to enzyme systems: high concentrations cause inhibition of the enzymatic activity of the cell. The most marked and characteristic changes in saccharolytic processes appeared chiefly in the 1st days of exposure to the presence of disinfectant. At subsequent stages, adaptation of the culture occurs as exhibited by reversion to the saccharolytic activity which had been lost with respect to certain carbohydrates. Under the influence of disinfectants, inhibition of saccharolytic activity and an increase in proteolytic activity occur. The most stable characteristic of the cell is its antigenic properties which change only after prolonged treatment with the harmful agent causing profound irreversible disruption of metabolic processes. Substantial changes in the enzymatic and serological properties of the cell occur only after prolonged (6-10 mo.) treatment with the harmful agent. The magnitude of the changes in enzymatic and serological properties of the bacterial cell depends on the concentration of the agent, on the length of exposure in its presence and on the chemical specificity of the disinfectant.
