Effect of female genotype on fertility and hatchabllity in chickens

, : Effect of female genotype on fertility and hatchabllity in chickens. Ceylon Veterinary J 12(1/2): 5-11

Two experiments are described which provided data to indicate an effect of female genotype on fertility. Highly inbred lines of chickens, incrosses, and 3-way crosses among them, were used. The technique of artificial insemination was adopted. Statistical analyses of the data indicated a highly significant difference in percentage fertility between different classes of females (P < 0.001). Nevertheless, further experiments are suggested before it is concluded that it is an entire female genotype effect or zygote genotype effect or both that are responsible for increased fertility. It was, however, possible to conclude that neither the fertilizing ability of cock spermatozoa nor any influence of the sire on embryonic survival is impaired by inbreeding of the males.
