Effect Of Pregnancy On Uterine Lactic Dehydrogenase Isoenzymes

, : Effect Of Pregnancy On Uterine Lactic Dehydrogenase Isoenzymes. Revue Canadienne de Biologie 23: 497-499

It is demonstrated in the rat and the rabbit that pregnancy preferentially increases the "Muscle" type of lactic dehydrogenase isoenzyme in the uterus, independently of the hypertrophy accompanying the presence of the fetuses in the uterine horns. It is concluded that the change in uterine lactic dehydrogenase subunit composition brought about by pregnancy is secondary to the physiological release of estrogens. This phenomenon represents a unique example of hormonal regulation of the subunit synthesizing system of an enzyme. Since the M-type enzyme performs better in anaerobic conditions with a high lactate concentration, it is possible that the role of estradiol during pregnancy is to prepare the uterus for the intense and prolonged type of contraction encountered during labor.
