Effect of various laxatives on the intestinal flora

, : Effect of various laxatives on the intestinal flora. Pharmazie 21(7): 426-429

Bacterial counts of Lactobacillus bifidus, Escherichia coli, and enterococci (Streptococcuslaecalis, etc.) are reduced after administra-tion of Pyrilax (4,4[image] -diacetoxy-diphenylpyridyl-2-methane), showing maximal effect during the 4th to 6th days, then returning to normal; there was an increase in yeast counts. With Carlsbad salts, there was also a drop in L. bifidus and colon group counts, most pronounced from the 3rd to 5th days followed by a return to normal levels; neither enterococci nor yeasts showed significant decreases. (Figure indicated a greater decrease in enterococci than with Pyrilax, with significant decreases on days 2, 5, 6). The most significant decreases in bacterial counts of L. bifidus, E. coli and yeasts resulted from dosage with castor oil, reaching a maximum on the 4th day; however, enterococci were not effected. 37 references.
