Effect on the tobacco moth of flowing steam vapor under vacuum

, : Effect on the tobacco moth of flowing steam vapor under vacuum. Tobacco Sci 10: 113-115

The egg, larval and pupal stages of the tobacco moth, Ephestia elutella, (Hubner) were exposed to flowing steam vapor under vacuum. The temperature ranged evaluated was 120[degree] to 130[degree] F at corresponding absolute pressures ranging from 3.5 to 5.1 inches of mercury. Steam flow rates of 1 or 4 lb/hr were tested. With no tobacco in the chamber, 17.5 min. were required to kill all test insects exposed at the lowest temperature used (120[degree] F), and 1 min. at 130[degree] F, the highest temperature. The insect stages, in order of decreasing resistance to this treatment, were the egg, pupa, and larva.
