Eingesauertes Kartoffelkraut als Futter fur Milchkuhe

, : Eingesauertes Kartoffelkraut als Futter fur Milchkuhe. Biedermann S Zentralbl Agrikulturchem Abt B Tierernahr 7(6): 517-531

A study was made of the practicability of ensiling potato tops for dairy cows. Cold fermentation was carried out in small pit silos of 1.5 cu. m. capacity. In the 1st no addition was made; in the 2nd an acid solution of "Penthesta grim" was added; to the 3rd, an acid solution of "Penthesta grim" and sugar; and to the 4th, sugar only. Two kinds of potato plants, Parnassia and Ackersegen, were compared. The former showed a lower content of crude protein and crude fiber than the latter, in both fresh plants and silage. The agents added to favor ensilage did not influence the content of nutrients, but cows were inclined to refuse the 1st and the 3rd, which had high acetic-acid content. Digestion trials on 2 methods indicate for the silage made with sugar only the following % of digestible nutrients on the dry basis: organic matter 34.61, crude protein 6.14, true protein 3.19, amides 2.95, fat 1.68, N-free extract 15.39, crude fiber 11.40%; and a starch value of 24.13 kgm. per 100 kgm. When tested on dairy cows with other feeds supplied, the ingestion of an av. of 8 kgm. of the ensiled potato plants per cow per day worked no injury to the health, the live wt., or the "milk yield.
