Electrolyte content of brain and blood after deprivation of paradoxical sleep

After 10 days of selective paradoxical sleep deprivation in rats the blood and brain K concentrations decreased. The decreased K content as well as the decreased acetylcholine level of the telencephalon reported by Bowers, Hartmann and Freedman may be the causes of increased neural excitability.
