Electron-microscopic study of the stomata of rye leaves

, : Electron-microscopic study of the stomata of rye leaves. Bot Zh 51(3): 446-449

The epidermis of a young of rye (Secale cereale) leaf taken with the layer of subepidermal cells was mounted and examined by electron microscope. The plastids found within the guard cells of the stomata are easily distin[long dash]guishedfrom chloroplasts. An especially large number of mitochondria were noted; vacuoles were found in the broad end-section of the guard cells. The membrane between the guard cells has large perforations allowing their cytoplasm to have direct contact; they may have some cell organs (organelles) in common. Occasionally the vacuoles of these cells combine to form 1 vacuole. Both the guard and companion cells actively participate in the movement of the stomata. Both sets of cells expend a great amount of energy in this movement. Photosynthesis of the guard cells evidently has no decisive role in the movement of the stomata since they have no normal chloroplasts. The direct contact of the cytoplasm of the guard cells, the presence of common organelles and the combination of vacuoles permits much cooperation between them.
