Males of 6 populations of "inbred" mice and of 6 populations of "hybrid" mice were mated with their sisters and with females of an unrelated inbred stain. The 6 populations in each group represent 3 levels of spermatog-onial X-irradiation and 2 levels of inbreeding. Spermatogonia were exposed to 0, 50, or 100 r of X-rays in each generation, and the inbreed-ing coefficient was varied but controlled within limits by fixing the number of mated pairs per generation as either 8 or 16. The popula-tions were propagated for 11 generations with random mating excluding brother-sister matings. The females, both sister and unrelated, were killed at about 15 days of pregnancy and the numbers of corpora lutea, "moles," dead fetuses, and living fetuses counted to see if any differences in embryonic mortility attributable to radiation exposure, inbreeding level, or both had developed between the populations. The mice in the litters from the brother-sister matings each received 2 irradiated or control genomes, whereas the mice in the litters from the outcrosses received only one irradiated or control genome. No differences between the populations related to radiation or inbreeding experiences were apparent in rates of embryonic losses prior to implantation, immediately after implantation, or long after implantation. The total number of females dissected was 902; the average number was 37.6 per set.
