Enzymatic and morphologic complements in the study of Pirhemocyton chamaeleonis

, : Enzymatic and morphologic complements in the study of Pirhemocyton chamaeleonis. Bull Soc Pathol Exot 53(4): 613-616

Pirhemocyton chamaeleonis was found in the erythrocytes of 35 of 250 Chamaeleo lateralis captured around Tananarive, in 1 of 40 C. verrucosus from central and western Madagascar, and in none of 90 C. oustaleti from eastern Madagascar. It produces succinic dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase, and is retained by L 3 filters. It can survive 6 days in Culex fatigans, but transmission attempts by mosquito bite or by feeding infected mosquitoes did not succeed. When injected into chameleons, it multiplies in their erythrocytes, destroying them and killing the animals.
