Errors in antibiotic therapy as factors in chronicity of infectious diseases

, : Errors in antibiotic therapy as factors in chronicity of infectious diseases. Terapia 48(362/363): 127-135

Early administration of antibiotics often results in subacute bacterial endocarditis, and prevents proper diagnosis. Antibiotic therapy should be instituted after a precise etiological diagnosis, but where this is impossible, studies of blood, urine, pus etc., should be undertaken as early as possible, so that errors can be corrected. Association of antibiotics sometimes is incorrect, since some of these drugs are antagonists of others. Some cases that appear refractory, e.g., typhoid fever when treated with chloramphenicol, are actually improperly dosed, or antibiotic therapy was interrupted too soon. The administration route is likewise of importance, and the use of suppositories, particularly with children, may be ineffective. Allergic reactions should be guarded against, although severe secondary manifestations are quite rare. Disturbances of the equilibrium following antibiotic therapy can give rise to candidosis. Avitaminosis due to antibiotics is less dangerous than is commonly supposed.
